Every species of wood can have varying colour and grain pattern. Different woods are used to create variations (shading) of the artwork.
Cost can vary tremendously within the same species of wood: be it rough sawn or S4S (Smooth 4 Sides), be it clear or knotty, be it narrow or wide, be it a “regular” pattern or a rare grain pattern,: for example regular maple versus bird’s eye maple. Fluctuations in price from the wholesaler and in turn my supplier can vary monthly. Cost listed is based on an average. I am fortunate to have a supplier, Windsor Plywood (on Pembina) in Winnipeg. They carry the following exotic woods as well as many others. They can be reached at (204) 269-9114.
Average cost per board feet varies greatly from as low as $5/board foot to $60/board foot. (144 cubic inches: = 1 board foot) Example: 2″ x 6″ x 1 foot (12 inches) = 144 cubic inches or 1 board foot.
In addition, availability and transportation become cost factors. For example, the modified aspen is shipped from Quebec and suitable blue pine is rare. My only source is from California.
